It is commonly said that a nation can prosper only if his citizens are educated. Rotary International also emphasize this concept and made it as one of the seven focal points of Rotary.
Rotary Club of Dhaka Luminous took several projects in line of RI’s guidelines. We have adopted a signature project – giving School Furniture to those poor schools who cannot afford basic furniture i.e., table/chair to the students. These schools are mostly the primary schools at the village side where education is a challenge.
This is our continuous efforts to support the underprivileged schools and till date appx 750 sets of table and chairs were distributed across the country. Scholastica – well reputed education institute is sponsoring us in this regard. Every year they phase out number of furniture which with little fixing & painting can be easily reused. Reusing the furniture also puts less demand on environment.
Till now the project value is more than Tk one crore. Few glimpses of the project are shared below-

Autistic Children’s Welfare Foundation situated at Banorupa housing, Dhaka run by donations of many individuals. We have distributed 60 school tables and 120 chairs to this school. This was a joint service project, focusing basic education and literacy of RCD Luminous and RC Dhaka.

Mozaber Hossain Foundation is running a school named Mozaber Hossain Kindergarten, situated at Joukura, Rajbari. We have distributed 61 sets of School Chairs and Tables. This was a joint service project, focusing basic education and literacy of RCD Luminous and RC Dhaka.

Autism Care & Advancement Centre, House no#13, Road no#3 Shekhertak, Mohammadpur, Dhaka is a school for autistic children and they are running their school taking supports from others. RCD Luminous has given 31 sets of table and Bench for the school. This was a joint service project, focusing basic education and literacy of RCD Luminous and RC Dhaka.

Pre-primary Shishu Bikash Kendra and Tabitha Kindergarten at Amnura – a highly marginalized SANTAL community / village in Chapai Nawabganj district. This was a joint strategic service project of RCD Kawran Bazar and Rotary Club of Padma Rajshahi. Luminous had given 50 pcs of Desks and 18 pcs benches at Shishu Bikash Kendra and Tabitha Kindergarten at Amnura.

As we said, this is our one of the signature projects and it will continue. This may be a drop in the ocean but we feel proud to be able to contribute a very little to the support of basic education.
In this context I like to recognize two of our fellow colleagues, Rotarian PP Mushfiqur Rahman PHF and Rotarian PP Md Shahidul Haque PHF who are also my colleagues in Scholastica for their outstanding support to this project. Rtn Mushfique, was instrumental to this project. Rtn Shahid also gave his all-out support to initiate this mega event.
