In August 2024, Bangladesh experienced severe flooding, primarily in the eastern regions. This was the worst flood in 30 years, displacing over 500,000 people and affecting around six million across multiple districts. Triggered by heavy rainfall and rising river levels, the floods caused widespread devastation, including 59 reported deaths, significant destruction of homes, and damage to agriculture, livestock, and infrastructure. Economic losses from crop damage alone are estimated at $282 million, while the fisheries and livestock sectors suffered another $156 million in losses.
